The fifth annual TEDxAUBG conference took place on April 9th, 2016 at the Carl Djerassi Theater Hall. For this year's edition all speeches and performances were based on the topic of Patterns. Bulgaria: breeding ground for musical talent. News to you? That's because Ruth Koleva is a different breed of artist. Born into a volatile world of corruption and hardship in post-Communist Eastern Europe, she endured a difficult childhood largely spent without her mother, found salvation in the classics (Marvin Gaye, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole) and became 'tour-hardened' by jaunts to far-flung destinations such as India and Thailand. From there, Koleva quickly developed into a rounded musician, spending an eye-opening year at the Hollywood Pop Academy and embarking on free-spirited excursions into several local scenes including soul, hip hop and the more ephemeral bass movement. In 2015 Ruth was awarded the Best Female Vocalist prize at the Jazz Ain’t Jazz Awards in Japan. Her debut album, RUTH, was an instant success in the UK Soul Chart and the BBC playlists. And the truth is is that people don't really understand what happens after trauma. Sadly, when people don't understand what you're going through, it's very invalidating. So with this video I wanted to help you to understand the difference between when your brain is just being you're just living life and when your brain is in survival, when you're stuck in survival there's two different ways that our brain reacts and it causes different feelings, thoughts and actions in us. So if anyone is going through this I am hoping that this video will provide the validation that you desperately are seeking. So this is your brain just being: When our brain is relaxed and it's just being just living we feel open to learning new information, it's easy to retain the information we learn in the sense that it's not in one ear out the other. We also can recognize that there may be other interpretations or perceptions that are different than the way we see things.....

Experiencing narcissistic abuse will have a huge impact on your emotional and psychological well-being. It will lead to living in a heightened state of survival known as flight or fight. This survival mechanism kicks in because of the constant threat, gaslighting and manipulation you’ve endured. When you experience this, it will trigger your urge to either get away from them or fight back. Going into flight mode you may freeze, avoid confrontation or boundaries. Fight mode looks more like you reacting instead of responding to them. Unless you have experienced this type of relationship you will have no idea how much this has impacted how you feel.
